What makes a good investment piece

We've all heard of investment pieces: a garment or accessory that could be considered expensive but will increase in value over time and/or the frequency you wear it balances out the larger price tag. Many of us want to upgrade our wardrobe and add investment pieces into our lives, but just because something took 6 months to save for doesn't mean it's a quality investment. We have a disconnect with what we're offered as quality and what actually is quality, and my hope is that through future detailed posts I can help you recognize a good investment piece based on craftsmanship and material.

As a general rule if you're going to splurge on something I recommend starting with outerwear, handbags, or shoes. For one thing these are not entirely dependent on fitting your body in only one state. A great coat can make all the difference in cold winters and usually gives some room to exist without restrictions, a good pair of shoes can last years with proper care, and handbags carry around things we literally can't leave the house without so why not make sure it's something that is worthy of carrying around life's must haves?

Other investment pieces can be great but only if you know what you're investing in, and if your budget can only accommodate one or two things right now, consider the above suggestions before splurging on something that requires maintaining a certain form or lifestyle. Personally I utilize second hand for most of my wardrobe, and invest in custom boots that serve me best for the NW climate, a few good handbags that can survive tossing them around, and outerwear that essentially becomes my outfit for much of the year. Everyone will have different needs and priorities, and it's good to reflect on what you really use and could upgrade. Once we get a handle on quality elements to look for, you can even recognize a great piece second hand and upgrade with a little patience and treasure hunting. A little education, self reflection, and acceptance, means that you can build a wardrobe that serves you best, for who you are right now.
